Born: December 28, 1908
Died: November 28, 2013
Herb passed from this life into the presence of the Lord on November 28, 2013 at the age of 104. He was born in Gardena, California, December 28, 1908. After a childhood spent on the central California coast he graduated from Santa Rosa High School, 1926. Interrupting studies at Santa Rosa Com. College in 1928 Herb served as a seaman on a freighter sailing from San Francisco, Calif. through the Panama Canal, to Cuba, and finally New York. Herb hitchhiked back to Calif. In 1929, bitten by the “sea-bug”, he signed onto the S.S. Van Buren, Dollar Steamship Line, as an apprentice officer. During the 110-day globe-circling voyage the ship visited 13 foreign ports. On that voyage Herb was assured of eternal life in the Lord Jesus Christ. To follow were studies and graduation from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL. 1932.
Herb married Mabel Phipps of Selma, CA in 1934, a graduate of BIOLA, and together for 71 years they served the Lord. Early years were spent in Christian radio ministry, revivals and evangelistic campaigns often with Herb’s father Herbert Sr. and brother Eldon. Herb served as song leader, children’s choir director and musical specialist. During the next fifty years Herb pastored Baptist churches in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Colorado, Nevada, California, and Oregon. While in California, during WWII Herb served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary patrolling San Francisco Bay. In 1946 Herb was instrumental in co-founding Western Baptist Bible College serving as President for two years. He taught public speaking and music, and served on the Board of Directors for 22 years. Corban University, Salem, Oregon now proudly carries forward that legacy of Christian training and professional education.
During later years Herb and Mae served as Campground Hosts with the California State Parks System. Spokane, WA became their home in 1994 and where they worshipped at Trinity Baptist Church. With Mae’s passing in 2005, Herb made his home at Lilac Plaza Retirement Center. Many summers he tended the Lilac roses and was honored to have his name placed on the Rose Garden. Herb enjoyed the activities and friendship of many at Lilac. His last home was Willow Grove Assisted Living, Spokane where he was professionally and compassionately watched over by the many gracious caregivers. Dentist Chaffin, Intrepid Nursing, and Horizon Hospice saw him into his last days.
Herb’s beautiful tenor voice could be heard throughout his life up to his last days. Singing was his “trademark” and great joy.
Herb and Mae’s three daughters are: Yvonne Howe, Yukon, Canada, Lorraine Owens, Spokane, WA and Janice Farrar, Boulder, CO. There are five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
