Clarence R. Block Obituary (Age 87) Clarence was born on January 6, 1923 to Nicholas and Olga Block. He grew up in Spokane and attended Rogers High School and was a member of the Hillyard Boosters and was a member of the team that won the 1940 City Golf Championship. At age 17 he joined the Navy and was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown when it sunk at the Battle of Midway where he earned his purple heart. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Jane. He is survived by his sons Nick Block and Mike Block, and wife Karen as well as their children Jared and Jessica Block. There will be a viewing at Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 from Noon to 5:00PM. A funeral service will be held at 1:00PM on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Heritage Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to Spokane VAMC, attention Volunteer Services, 4815 N. Assembly, Spokane, WA 99205.
