Joan Alice (Bremner Hoitink Obituary (Age 79) Joan passed away September 4, 2011 in Spokane. She was born September 6, 1931 in Republic, WA to Alex and Claire Bremner. She attended high school in Republic and Walla Walla, then graduated from Washington State University in 1953 with a degree in medical technology. Joan worked at Pathology Associates as a lab tech for 25 years, specializing in abnormal blood cells. She married Steve Hoitink in 1965 in Spokane where they resided for 45 years, cooking in their gourmet kitchen and gardening in their famous garden. Joan's botanical knowledge and cookbook/recipe collection were only eclipsed by her love to share them. Joan was a member of Alpha Delta Phi sorority at WSU, a longtime member of the Penstemon Society, Rock Garden Society, friends of Dishman Hills, The Inland Empire Garden Society and Gourmet Gardeners. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 46 years Steve; children Linda Kearns, David Hoitink, Carolyn Seim and Terri Brazil of Spokane, Don Kearns of San Diego, CA; brother Bryan Bremner of Republic; grandchildren Marion and Leland Kearns of San Diego, CA, and first husband Don Kearns of Ellensburg, WA. Memorial contributions may be made to The Inland Empire Gardeners, TIEG, P.O. Box 13184, Spokane Valley, WA 99213 (tieg.org).
