Kathleen Frances Beard

Kathleen Frances Beard Obituary Passed away April 5, 2009 at Royal Park Care Center. She was born in Spokane on May 3, 1914 to Harry and Kathleen Calkins and lived here all her life. She graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in 1932 and U of W in 1936 where she was an active member of Delta Gamma Sorority, co-editor of the U of W Daily and a member of Mortar Board (Honor Society). She married Harold Beard on August 15, 1939 at St. John's Cathedral. Kathleen lived at Nine Mile Falls for over 70 years; 59 of those years in her own home on the Little Spokane River. She was executive assistant to Mr. Bacon at The Crescent Department Store in the 1930s. She was very involved in the Spokane Junior League and the Terrace Garden Club. She was a very active member of St. John's Cathedral, being treasurer of both St. Nicholas Guild and the Altar Guild, and a member of the Cathedral Landscape Association. She loved volunteering at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. Kathleen is survived by her children; son Harold Beard, Jr. of Portland, OR, and daughter Charlotte Vincent of Fairfield, MT; sisters Mary Louise Smith of Portland, OR and Harriet Smith of Mound, MN; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, and a brother J. Bartlett Calkins. When Kathleen wasn't busy with all her activities, she was gathering friends to play bridge. She loved to garden, watch the birds and feed the deer. Her memory will forever be shared for many years to come. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Guild at St. John's Cathedral or to the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 1:00pm at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., Spokane.
