Kurt Herman Schlicker Obituary
(Age 83)
Passed away on April 3, 2010 in Spokane, WA. Kurt was born in Biedenkopf, Germany in the Hessenland. From early on he loved to hike and wander the hills of Eschenberg, by the town's castle close to his home.
At the age of 16, he was taken into the Army and then was a Prisoner of War in France for four years. After the war, he met the love of his life, Inge. Later they immigrated with their two children, Jurgen and Marion to Montreal, Canada. In Montreal, they had their third child, Hans, and they moved to Labrador, then Toronto, then immigrated to the United States and settled in California. Kurt worked for Caterpillar and resided in Castro Valley and then Dublin. He coached soccer in the 1960's and 1970's and during his coaching career won the California State Cup. He then built a family "Berghaus" in Pinecrest, CA in his beloved High Sierras. This was a place where the entire family loved to celebrate being together. He loved backpacking, mountain climbing, skiing and being among "Muir's" peaks. Opa instilled the love of nature and the mountains in his children and grandchildren. They remember the yodeling and harmonica playing during their many treks into the mountains. In retirement, Kurt and Inge moved to Gardnerville, Nevada with a view of Job's Peak from his house. In 2000 they moved to Spokane, WA. Kurt and Inge recently celebrated their 57th anniversary together. The family thanks Hospice for their assistance and kindness during the last weeks of Kurt's life. Also, thanks to Terry and her staff at DSI Renal for their love and excellent care. Special thanks to Dr. Obermiller and his staff for their help and support, also to Dr. Seppi and his nurse Erica who were always there for us. Kurt was preceded in death by brothers Willi, Hans and Erich Schlicker and his sister Gertrude Schlicker. He is survived by his loving wife, Inge; son Jurgen Schlicker; grandson Kurt of Carson City, Nevada, daughter and son-in-law Marion and Craig Bageant; grandson Michael; granddaughters Emily and Mary; step-grandson and his wife, Blane and Hillary Bageant of Spokane, WA; son Hans Schlicker, Lisa Schlicker; grandchildren Kaelen, Jesse and Laci of Livermore, CA. The memorial service will be on Friday, April 23, 2010 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. with Pastor Tim Brandt officiating.
