Margaret Carol (McQuarrie) Thomas Obituary
Margaret Carol McQuarrie Thomas, (80) died June 27, 2009, with her family by her side in Spokane, Washington. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 1, 1pm, at the LDS Church, 5001 N. Shawnee. A viewing (closed casket) will be held from 11:30am to 12:30pm prior to the memorial service. She was born November 20, 1928 to Daniel and Margaret Irving McQuarrie in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the third of four children in her family. Margaret graduated from East High in 1945 and the University of Utah with a teaching degree in 1949. She taught in Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah. While at the University of Utah Margaret met Bill Thomas and they were married March 23, 1950. They moved to Spokane in 1962. During 1965 Bill and Margaret purchased a small candy company and renamed it Spokandy. The Thomas family ran and worked Spokandy for the next 17 years selling the business in the 1980s. Margaret was a life member of Delta Gamma, a woman's service organization which focused on helping those who experience blindness. As part of her 40 years of service she was the president of the Lilac City Blind Foundation for 3 years and served on the executive board. She also worked with her husband for many years in Rotary and was selected as a Paul Harris Fellow for lifetime achievement bestowed by Rotary International. Margaret was also a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She did volunteer work throughout her life including serving as a Ward Relief Society President for 5 years and an early morning seminary teacher for 8 years. She also assisted her husband when he served as a counselor to the Washington Spokane Mission President for 3 years. Her interests included family, gardening, church service and reading. Mrs. Thomas is survived by her husband Bill; a sister Edna (Teddy) McQuarrie Robbins; a daughter and her spouse, Cecelia and Terry McClure; 2 sons and their spouses, Bruce and Patti Thomas and Rob and Monta Thomas; and 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
