Merle Alice Hopkins Obituary
Passed away April 10, 2009. Merle was born an only child to Ella Scharnhorst Jess in Genesee, ID November 27, 1918. She lived briefly in Lewiston, ID before moving to Spokane where she grew up and graduated from North Central High School and Morse School of Beauty Culture, class of June 1937. She then owned and operated her own beauty salon. She became the devoted and loving wife of Harry L. Hopkins on March 8, 1941. He passed September 2, 2008. They were married for 67 years. She always had a soft spot for children. Never realizing her much cherished desire for children, Merle filled her life loving and caring for the people around her. She also had a great love of animals, especially cats. She loved "getting into people's hair" and she worked for many years as a beauty operator. She finished her career at Tress Chic with her beloved friend Betty Nelson. Harry and Merle danced several times a week their entire life together. She loved music of all kinds. She played bridge once a week with her good friends and knew how to throw a party and did so many times over the years. But when a friend was in need, Merle was there. She had a quick intuitive wit and a large heart and will be sorely missed. Merle is survived by a cousin Donald Alm of Grangeville; brother-in-law Homer Hopkins of LaCrosse; many nieces and nephews; cousins; in-laws and friends. Viewing will be held Monday morning before the service. Funeral Services 2:00PM Monday April 20, 2009 at Heritage Chapel.
