Vera Joyce Horton-Sele Obituary
(Age 88) Joyce passed away on May 20, 2015 in Omak, WA. She was born on October 1, 1926 in Plymouth, England to her parents Ada Mae and Earnest Hancock. Joyce graduated high school at the age of 14. As a teenager, life was challenging for her. WWII was devastating. Her role was as an Air Raid Warden. This meant she was the person to knock on doors during an air raid and tell people to go to a shelter or their basements.
She met a US Soldier at a dance by the name of Larry Horton who was stationed in England. They were married in 1945. Their life began together in Paris where they lived for a year or two. They then came home to the USA and lived in Tacoma, WA. Joyce worked hard to become a US Citizen which she did accomplish. Joyce and Larry had two children. Barry, born in 1947 and Linda, born in 1949.
In 1961 they moved to Airway Heights, WA where Larry?s brother was in the Air Force. Joyce worked at Fairchild AFB. She worked in the Commissary cashiering for years, left and became a Real Estate Agent and then years later returned to Fairchild in Property Management at Civil Engineering where she retired in 1993.
Joyce and Larry lost their son, Barry, in the Vietnam War in 1969. Larry passed away in 1998 at which time Joyce moved to Omak, WA to be close to her daughter and son-in-law. It was there that she met and married Richard Sele. They enjoyed many years together celebrating their 13th wedding anniversary on May 11, 2015.
She is survived by her husband Dick at home; daughter Linda (Roger) Bird; daughter-in-law Anne (Bill) Tuttle; grandchildren Sue (Clark) Gemmill, Tony (Lindsay) Bird, Keith (Kitty) Bird, Randy (Kim) Bird and many great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Joyce is preceded in death by her father, mother, husband Larry Horton and son Barry Horton.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, May 29 at 5:00pm at Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5909 Cheney Spokane Rd, Spokane, WA 99224.
