Alma V. McGregor Obituary (Age 90) On November 23, 2016 at the age of 90, Alma Viola McGregor left the Earth to spend a glorious eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her husband, William J. McGregor, and members of her family who passed before her were there to greet her. Alma was born to George and Helena Schlaht in January 1926, on the family farm near Mound City, SD. Almas mom passed away when she was only four years old. At the age of seven, during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl Era, the family moved West to the Newport, WA area. During her school years, she had worked at a movie theater and a drug store in Newport. During the WWII era, she took a job at the Kress Dime store and also worked for Jensen Byrd in Spokane. After the war in 1946, she met her loving husband, William J. McGregor, and they were married on Valentines Day in 1947. They spent 54 years together and during that time, they had 3 children: Diana, Maureen and Kenneth. For 15 years, Ken became moms full-time, dedicated and compassionate caregiver. Mom and Dad spent many a weekend teaching the next two generations the joys of lake life, boating, fishing, skiing and entertaining at their lake house on Pend Oreille and many other lakes they loved. On several occasions, Mom out-fished Dad, which made for a good bet between them and lots of fun for their next fishing trip. They enjoyed bowling on leagues together and entertained often with family and friends, dancing and playing card games. Mom told us about riding a Harley when she was a teen, we gasped! During a USO dance our mom and a lieutenant friend of hers won the best dancers contest. Mom played basketball in school, enjoying the sport and truly loved all sports. She became a great fan of the Zags, the Mariners and the Seahawks, with a few choice words for their performance now and then. Mom loved the holidays, from decorating our home, the fun Easter egg hunts, to the wonderful holiday feasts that we always celebrate with family and friends. Mom was always complimented on her delicious meals. Mom never forgot her children, her 13 grandchildren and her 21 great grandchildrens birthday and Christmas cards. She was very adamant about writing positive encouragement and love to all. She had beautiful hand writing right up to her final days. Alma was at Manor Care Rehabilitation Center recovering from a short illness that had incapacitated her. She was working hard and getting stronger when she succumbed to a stroke. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband, William; and her 12 siblings. She is survived by her sister Vera Beck; her three children, Diana Wise of Colbert, WA, Maureen McGregor of Colbert, WA and Ken McGregor Spokane, WA; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. A special thank you to granddaughter Audrey for all of the time she spent with Mom and a special thank you to nephew Archie McGregor, Jr. Dear Mom, thanks for everything. We love and miss you. A graveside service was held on December 1, 2016 with the immediate family. Alma requested not to have a funeral. We, her children, would like to have a family celebration of Almas life at a later date. Almas favorite charities were the Shriners Hospital and the Salvation Army.
