1928 in Portland, Oregon to Emma and August Heller, he was raised on a farm in Damascus, Oregon and attended Damascus Grade School and Gresham High School. He married Patricia Scheer, from Rosalia, WA, and moved to Spokane in 1953 and has lived there ever since. He served in the Oregon National Guard and transferred to the Washington National Guard in 1953. He enjoyed working on cars, helping family and friends with their automobiles and taking pride in his own cars, trucks and boats. He, with his family, shared a cabin, which they built with the help of his brother-in-law, Norman Scheer and his father-in-law. They enjoyed fishing, boating, and building, for 49 years. As the main driver of the family speed boat, he took the family and many of the children's friends water skiing and on boat trips up the St. Joe River and to Coeur d' Alene. Not being raised by a lake or having access to one, he thoroughly enjoyed the cabin at Conkling Park on Coeur d' Alene Lake for many years.
