Arthur “Art” Penn Sabiston of Spokane passed away on December 7th, five days after celebrating his 82nd birthday.  He was surrounded by his family and the comfort of his faith.

Art was born and raised by Ralph and Florence Sabiston in Spokane, Washington.  He received his MA from Eastern Washington State University.  Art dedicated his career to teaching metal shop and industrial arts at Mead High School and also taught in the Spokane and Spokane Valley Skill Centers.  He helped thousands of students build skills and confidence that positively impacted their futures.  After retiring from teaching at Mead, he and Bonnie managed the Waitts Lake Open Bible Camp for four years.

Art shared over 57 years of loving marriage with his wife, Bonnie, who survives him.  He is also survived by his sister, Jeannie (Roland) of Lacey, WA; his sons, Kirk (Anna) of Minnesota and Lance of Tennessee; and four grandchildren — Larissa, Scarlett, Rory, and Liam.

Art will be remembered for his unmistakable, impressive mustache and for his lifelong dedication to fitness — including earning the title of Mr. Inland Empire in his body building days and for setting weightlifting records at the YMCA and elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest.  He was fiercely independent and determined, remaining true to himself, as well as a strong provider who remained dedicated to his family until the very end.

The graveside service will be held at noon on Tuesday, December 23rd, at Fairmount Memorial Park (5200 W. Wellesley Ave, Spokane, WA 99205) with a reception to follow.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Art’s name to the American Welding Society Spokane Chapter Scholarship Fund.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sacred Heart Medical Center and to all who have offered love, prayers, and support during this difficult time.  Art and Bonnie were particularly thankful for the loving care of the staff nurses and doctors at SHMC over an extended time and for Dr. Jeffery Trail and his staff for their friendship and care over many years.  We are most thankful that Art had professed faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for salvation and that he passed peacefully into Heaven.
