Barbara J. Anderson – affectionally known to those who loved her as Mama, Grandma, Granny, Grammie, Great Gram, Lil Big Mama, Aunt Barbara and simply Barbara – went home to be with the lord on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in Avondale, Arizona, at morning Star Senior Living.

Barbara was born on April 16, 1935, to the late Ed and Leola Davis. She was the fifth child of six siblings, all of whom preceded her in death. Barbara confessed to the Lord at an early age and joined Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Canton, Mississippi. She remained an active and faithful member until she married her high school sweetheart Bobbie “Andy” Anderson.

As a devoted military spouse, she followed Andy throughout his military career. She made it her mission to continue following the Lord at each military base they traveled to during their journeys.

After moving to Spokane, Washington, Barbara and Andy joined Morning Star Baptist Church (MSBC). Barbara poured her heart into the ministry, serving faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, a Deaconess, and lending her beautiful voice to the choir (The Hummingbirds). She remained active in her service until her health began to fail, at which point she relocated to be near her family.

Barbara had an extraordinary love of people. She loved to cook and took immense joy in feeding others – if you came to her home, you were absolutely going to eat. Her house was always open for warm fellowship, entertainment, and much laughter. She was also I highly gifted seamstress, lovingly creating many church dresses for her dear friends.

Barbara and Andy welcomed five children into their union. She was incredibly proud of her children and loved them immensely.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Leola Davis; her beloved husband, Andy; three of her children, Tony, Astronaut Michael, and Diane; her sisters, Annetta, Ruby and Missy; and her brother, Theon and McKinley.

She leaves behind a rich legacy of love to cherish her memory, including her two devoted daughters, Joann and Brenda, her daughter – in- love, Sandy; her grandchildren, Bren Julius, Samantha, Sydney, Kaycee, and DeeDee; and her great-grandchildren, Julius Jr., Kay’Launi, Fenny, Julayah, Je’Remyiah, Jasion Jr. and Dejor. She is also survived by her special nephew James, her God children, ag with a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and lifelong friends.
