Betty Elizabeth Alice Graham

Betty Elizabeth Alice Graham, age 103, passed away peacefully into the loving hands of Jesus on January 24, 2025. She was born on August 12, 1921, and was the first child of Joe and Rose Bennett of Spokane, Washington.

Betty graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1939 and then later attended Kelsey-Baird Secretarial School. During World War II, Betty joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), working as a secretary for the U.S. Army. After her service in the WACs, Betty worked for fifteen years in the civil service for the Social Security Administration. Later in life, for ten years, she worked part-time as a sales clerk in the sewing department at the Crescent store in downtown Spokane.

Betty enjoyed the outdoors and joined the Mountaineers club in the early 1950s. It was there where she met, and fell in love with, John Gordon Graham. The two were married on June 23, 1956, at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Betty and Gordon always enjoyed traveling and camping, especially to Canada, where Gordon was from. They shared many happy times together in their fifty-four years of marriage. She loved Gordon, loved her many black labs, and loved each one of her extended family members. One of her greatest joys was spending holidays with her extended family.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Rose Bennett; her husband, Gordon Graham; and her nephew, Mike Bennett (Delia), of Bremerton, Washington. She is survived by her brother, Buddy Bennett of Spokane, Washington, and her sister, Lorna Freeman of Liberty Lake, Washington. She is also survived by nephews Dave Freeman, Tim Freeman (Kim), Pat Bennett (Lisa), and niece Mary Serrano.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ or to the Spokane Humane Society.
