Betty Joyce Wilson

November 20, 1930 - February 04, 2011

Betty Joyce Wilson Obituary (Age 80) Passed away February 4, 2011 in Spokane, Washington. She was born on November 20, 1930 in Spokane to A. Fredrick and Grace Bettfreund of Clayton, Washington. Betty attended grade school in Clayton and then, after moving to Deer Park, Washington, graduated from Deer Park High School in 1948. She enrolled at Eastern Washington University in Cheney (which was then called Eastern Washington College of Education). It was at college she met her husband to be, Walter H. Wilson. After her freshman year, Betty decided to leave school. She worked a secretarial position with a consulting engineer firm and then moved to a similar position with Phillips Petroleum Oil Refinery in Hillyard, Washington. Betty and Walter were married October 8, 1950 in Deer Park, Washington. The couple remained Spokane residents. After 14 years with Phillips, Betty returned to Eastern. She graduated in 1965 with a B. A. in Education and went to work for Spokane School District 81 as an elementary school teacher. She taught for three years and then became a "stay at home mom" of her only child Alexa. Betty joined a PEO chapter, and was still active in the organization acting as treasurer until the time of her death. In 1976, Betty began working with the Community College of Spokane teaching English as a Second Language. Betty transferred to a CETA program teaching for the next 20 years at the Institute For Extended Learning until retiring in 1996. Betty loved the outdoors. She enjoyed a large yard with gardens, deer and wild turkeys. Betty liked camping, skiing, bowling and tolerated golf. She loved pets, especially her precious kitty, Scarlet. She especially enjoyed the 50 years spent with her husband at their Loon Lake summer home, where she swam, boated and enjoyed time with family and friends. Betty was a selfless caregiver for her parents, both of her aunties and her husband as she provided for them in their time of need and ensured dignity and love for each of her loved ones as they aged and passed into eternity. Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband Walter. After 59 years of marriage they are together forever, she called him "Red" and he nicknamed her "Sweetie Face." Betty is survived by her daughter, Alexa Wilson and son-in-law Sean Hickey; her two grandsons, Sean Jr. and Conner Hickey, and her cousin Hazel Beck, all of Spokane. Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday 10:00am to 5:00pm at Heritage. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 11, 2011, at 2:00pm, at Heritage Chapel, followed by a private entombment at Riverside Mausoleum where Betty and Walt will be laid to rest together next to her parents. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 124 East Augusta Avenue, Spokane, WA 99207.
