Betty June Cobb Obituary
Betty June Sparks (Wood)-Christensen-Beardsley-Howerton-Cobb
Born March 8, 1918 and passed into the Loving care of Heaven on June 4, 2015.
Betty was born in Deer Park, WA on March 8, 1918 to Helen Pearle and Charles Sparks. Betty spent her childhood there and was raised by her loving grandparents following the untimely death of her mother, when she was a toddler. Betty had fond memories of living near her cousins and playing in the log pond and fishing in the lakes. Early on, she learned to drive in a Model T and loved to go to the barn dances.
Following her marriage to, Marshall Christensen, Betty moved to Spokane, WA. There she cleaned Officer?s quarters at Fort George Wright and later gave birth to her two Son?s Larry Christensen (deceased), and Wesley Christensen (deceased). Although many of her fond memories of being raised in Deer Park by her Grandparents were with her until her last breaths, she remained in Spokane where she eventually met and married Cecil Howerton and they raised their two daughters, Penny (Howerton) Whipple, and Cheryl (Howerton ? Finley) Zicha.
Betty was so proud of her children and Grandchildren and their accomplishments that she would literally stop virtual strangers to tell them all about them. The Howerton homemade cabin at Loon Lake, WA was the Summer hub for the family and friends where she loved taking hikes, star gazing, having bon fires on the beach, taking the kids skiing and tubing, playing Hearts with the neighbors, fishing, and delivering newspapers across the whole lake. She made Christmas a special time every year no matter what her resources were and gave great thought and time in choosing just the right gift for each of the grandchildren. She also loved her daughter-in-laws Linda Christensen and Lois (Christensen) Belyea and son-in-law?s Mark Whipple and Jeff Zicha.
Following the annual closure of the summer cabin, the family would move back to Spokane where Betty worked for many years as a teacher?s aide at Cooper Elementary School and on the local Election Board. Later on, she was very involved with the Hillyard Senior Center where she found Great delight in playing the card game Pinochle, and volunteering. She attended and cheered on as many of her Kids and Grandkids school programs as possible. Betty took great delight in her many grandchildren including Andrew and Rory Finley, Brooke Whipple, Heidi (Christensen) Rendahl, Jeanne, Karen, Mike, and Patrick (deceased) Christensen, Diana Christensen (Germany), Dan Williams, Carlye and Crystal Zicha, plus her many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Following the passing of Cecil, Betty met and married Gene Cobb. When Gene passed away, Betty was cared for by Whisper Creek Adult Family Home, Candlelight Adult Family Home, and Spokane Hospice House. Although Alzheimer?s took away much of her memory, she still held her family and friends so dear to her heart that her face would literally lighten with her smile when those memories would be rekindled with their presence, if only for a moment, but they proved to remain always near to her heart. The family would like to Thank all the gentle and loving caregivers that helped care for our Mother during the last days of her journey on earth, especially MaryEllen Peterson, the staff of Carol Williams, and the loving care she received by Spokane Hospice House staff. Special thanks to her daughter, Cheryl Zicha, who lovingly ensured her Mother had the best possible care each and every day. Rest in peace Dearest Mom and Grandma. We will miss you Always. May you be dancing in God?s Loving Grace!
