Carl Gene Swanson Obituary
Carl Gene Swanson passed on August 2, 2017 and was reunited with his wife, Joann. Carl was born on January 3, 1930 in Spokane. Shortly after graduating from Mead High School in 1948, Carl would go on to marry his childhood sweetheart, Joann Lyman. The two were neighbors and both went to Montford Elementary. They were married on April 8, 1950 and began a family that would grow to five children, 22 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Carl drove truck for Auto Freight, then worked in the woods for several years. After a logging accident, he founded the trucking business, Swanson Hay, in 1964, which is still family-operated in North Spokane. Along with working, Carl enjoyed playing pool, being a member of the Eagles, playing cards and watching his family enjoy life. Joann and Carl would take many trips to Reno and Vegas. Carl adored his family. He would greet them all with a big smile, and a thumbs-up with the Mariners game playing on the TV. His family will always remember him for being a great man. A hard-working individual, Carl was both strong and tender, frank and generous. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Carl had a handshake for everyone. Carl was preceded in death by wife, Joann Swanson and brothers Donald Swanson and Alfred Swanson. He is survived by sister, Agnes Swanson; his five children: Judith (Monte) George, Susan (Tony) Hansen, Steven (Christine) Swanson, Lorraine (Jim) Clark and Roberta Parker. Surrounded by family during his final moments, Carl said his goodbyes surrounded by love. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 13th at Fairmount Memorial Park at 11 a.m. A potluck luncheon in his honor will be held at the Swanson Hay shop afterwards. Please bring your stories and memories. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association at donations.diabetes.org.
