He was born May 27, 1918 in Taylor, ND to Charles and Anna Gabe and moved to Spokane in 1925. He served in the CCC's for six months in 1935 and graduated from North Central High School. He married Edna Thomas May 9, 1941 and she preceded him in death in 2009. Charles enlisted in the Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in 1942 and graduated in 1943 as a 2nd Lieutenant with bombardier rating. He served with the 11th Bomb Group of the 7th Air Force and flew 40 missions on a B24 in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Air Medal with six Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After discharge he worked in the trucking business for United Truck Lines, then was manager for Coast Carloading Company for 26 years, retiring in 1983. Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, softball, bowling and golf. He was inducted into the Spokane Metro Softball Hall of Fame in 1980 and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and a VFW lifetime member. He is survived by his daughter Melonnie (Lonnie) Davis; grandson Gabe Davis; granddaughter Courtney Wise (Patrick); great-grandsons Nolan and Logan Wise; sister Dorthea (Dodie) Tesarik; numerous nieces and nephews. The family thanks Chuck's wonderful neighbors John and Margie and the excellent staff at Regency at Northpointe. Visitation will be Wednesday 10-5 at Heritage and Graveside Service 1:00PM Thursday March 4, 2010 at Fairmount Memorial Park.
