Chuck passed at home in Spokane on Nov. 12, 2011. He was born June 25, 1934 in Buffalo, NY to Fred A. and Elizabeth (Wleklinski) Oberlander. Chuck grew up in East Pembrooke, NY. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and spent two years stationed in the Philippines. While stationed at Geiger Field, he met and married Donna Seipp in 1955. He left the Air force and worked at several companies, including Beardmore Consolidated and United Buckingham, doing heavy moving and trucking. Chuck started driving trucks for Roundup and stayed on through four ownership changes. He retired with SuperValue in 1996, after 24 years of accident-free driving. Among his proudest accomplishments was building his home himself west of Spokane. Beginning in 1968 he built the house including the living room rock wall and fireplace. Chuck enjoyed fishing and hunting and two trips to Alaska. In his later years he revived a life-long interest in rock collecting and making art pieces with his polished stones. He loved having his home full of family and friends. The Oberlander home was frequently the center of large gatherings. Chuck was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic parish, the Teamsters Union and The Rock Rollers Club. He is survived by his wife Donna, sons Rick and David and daughter Kellie Marie (Jim) Plumlee. He has eleven grandchildren: Brenna, Carrisa, Jessica, Gary, Ian, Abby, Emily, Bailey, Ashlie, Josh, and Alissa, and eleven great-grandchildren. He is survived by sisters Irene Penepent, Rita (Pete) Poodry, Nancy (Don) Flaig, and brothers Paul (Sandy), Tom and Russell (Mary Lou) Oberlander. He was preceded in death by his mother, sister Patricia Gioia, and brothers Arnold and James. A Rosary will be held Friday, Nov. 25 at 5:30pm at Our Lady of Lourdes. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Nov. 26 at 10:00am with reception to follow. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Contributions may be made to The Rock Rollers Club, PO Box 14766, Spokane Valley, WA 99214. Money donated will be used to provide scholarships to geology majors at EWU.
