Clara Lan Boston Obituary Departed this life May 30, 2009 after a short illness at the home of her daughter in Seattle, Washington. Mrs. Boston was born January 9, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the youngest child of Roselle and Mamie McClendon Lang of Langsdale, Mississippi. After graduating from Cleveland's Central High School in 1941, she married Newriel Albert Newton in 1943 and relocated to Spokane, Washington in 1948. Mrs. Boston attended Deaconess and Sacred Heart Schools of Nursing where she earned LPN and RN certificates. During her 40 year career as a health care professional, she worked as a nursing home director, a public health nurse, a psychiatric nurse, and a school nurse. As a community leader, Mrs. Boston worked closely with the Coalition of 100 Black Women, the NAACP, the Washington State Human Rights Commission, The Links, the Order of the Eastern Star and other groups. She also worked continuously along with others to oversee the renovation of Liberty Park and Pool and the construction of the East Central Community Center. She married her second husband, Carl Boston, in 1963. Mrs. Boston is survived by her sister Clottier Johnson, her daughter Gloria Jean Boston, and her sons Dr. Uhuru Hotep, Bari Newton, and Carl Boston, Jr. as well as great grandchildren, grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Her funeral will be held Saturday June 6 at 11 AM at Morning Star Baptist Church, 3909 West Rowan Ave. followed by internment at Greenwood Cemetery. Her family request that in lieu of flowers, donations are sent to the Center for Accelerated Learning, PO Box 19129, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 to establish a scholarship fund for African American nursing students in her name.
