Col. Melvin Wayne McCoury, Jr., USMC Retired Obituary
Melvin Wayne went to be with his Lord, November 4, 2015, at the Spokane Veterans Home, surrounded by his loving family.
Melvin was born May 19, 1930 in Spokane to Irene and Wayne McCoury. He graduated from Rogers High School in Spokane, 1947. After high school, he attended Gonzaga University and joined the Marine Corps Reserves. He enlisted full time in the Marine Corps in 1950. He served his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and earned military honors, including the Navy Commendation Award. He continued his military career and served as the Commanding Officer of RSLA and Commander of the 12th Marine Corps District. He also earned an accounting degree from Portland State University in 1962 and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi.
Melvin retired from military service in 1979, and moved with his family to Four Lakes, Washington. He became a Realtor and owned Community Properties in Airway Heights. He was an active member of the Lions Club and was the Director of the Retiree Activity Office, Fairchild Air Base.
Throughout his life he was always willing to help others in any way he could. He was a great storyteller and a proud Marine. He was an inspiration to many and will always be our Hero. We love you, Semper Fidelis!
He is survived by his loving wife Olive; daughters Debbie McCoury, Charmaine Maxwell and Melanie Caviness; sister Janice Richardson; brother David McCoury; six grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government way, Spokane, WA. Viewing will be Wednesday, November 11th from 10am to 5pm. Funeral Service will be Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 10am.
