David Lane Mielke July 26, 1939 – January 16, 2026

David Lane Mielke, born on July 26, 1939, in Olympia, Washington, passed away on January 16, 2026, in Spokane, Washington. He was the beloved son of Clarence “Gus” and Marie Mielke and is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Marcia Mielke; their children, Elisa, John, and Kristina; and his long-time partner and the love of his life, Candace Frasher.

David was a farmer first and foremost. He took over the family’s sour cherry business, growing and processing cherries that were sold to large national brands such as Dolly Madison and Hostess, while also selling fresh produce under the name Mielke Orchards. He was always on the lookout for a business opportunity. That entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when he became an extremely successful vendor at Expo ’74, where his fresh fruit platters became a favorite and a memorable part of Spokane’s World’s Fair.

David loved experimenting with heirloom seeds and took immense joy in growing numerous varieties in his gardens. On his beautiful personal estate, he cultivated tomatoes, raspberries, Hearts of Gold cantaloupes, and an ever-changing array of flowers. His gardens reflected both his curiosity and his care, rivaling no one else’s.

Together, brothers David and Harold, along with Marcia, founded Arbor Crest Wine Cellars, building not just a winery, but a lasting legacy rooted in vision, perseverance, and family. David took pride in what they created together, valuing the relationships and shared history as much as the accomplishment itself.

It was at Arbor Crest that David met Candace. Together they built a lifetime of love, partnership, and devotion. Their bond was steady and enduring, marked by deep respect, companionship, and joy.

David attended Washington State University, where he was a proud member of Beta Theta Pi. His years at WSU shaped lifelong friendships and reflected the values he carried throughout his life: loyalty, camaraderie, and integrity.

David had a deep appreciation for beauty and history. He loved antiques and the stories they carried, delighting in the character of old things and the craftsmanship behind them. His home reflected this passion and was filled with meaningful objects holding a story he loved to tell. He also had a profound love of travel where he was captivated by the culture, history, and depth of tradition.

David loved his dogs deeply: Charlie, Buttercup, Beverly, Lulu, Tag, and Puter, to name just a few. Each one held a special place in his heart. They were constant companions, a source of comfort and joy, and a reflection of his gentle, loyal nature. As well, he loved great food, excellent wine, and a fine cigar - simple pleasures that reflected his appreciation for craftsmanship, tradition, and savoring life’s moments.

Those who knew David knew his kindness and his dry, quick sense of humor. He listened more than he spoke, but when he did, his words were genuine, thoughtful, and often delivered with a perfectly timed remark. He had a calming presence and a way of making others feel seen without fanfare.

David’s legacy lives on in the people who loved him, in the objects he treasured, and in the story of a family business built with heart. He leaves behind a family and a circle of friends who will forever miss his quiet presence, thoughtful spirit, and quick wit.

He will be remembered for his appreciation of beauty, his love of classical music, his curiosity about the world, and the clever way he made it a warmer place.

At David’s request, no memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Alzheimer’s Association in his honor.
