Denise Clare (Ewert) Schatz

Denise Clare (Ewert) Schatz, age 93, died September 13, 2026. Denny was born to Arthur and Eve Ewert on May 22, 1933, in Ogden, Utah. After graduating from Ogden High School in 1951, she spent a year at the University of Colorado, then finished her degree in Education at the University of Utah where she was a member of Chi Omega and Phi Kappa Phi. She decided against teaching and became a stewardess for United Airlines. Upon completing training in Cheyenne, Wyoming, she was assigned to Newark, New Jersey.

Eventually she transferred to San Francisco, her favorite city. While living there she met future husband, Lloyd Otto Schatz, an Air Force officer at Mather AFB, California. They were married on December 28, 1959, in Ogden, Utah and came to Spokane, as Otto was then at Fairchild AFB as a B-52 navigator. She continued to work for UAL as a ticket agent in the downtown office.

In 1968 they moved to Montgomery, Alabama when Otto was selected for Air Command & Staff College. In 1969 they moved to George AFB, California. Their son, Jay Frederick, was born there, shortly before Otto's assignment to Southeast Asia. On his return, the family moved to Germany at USAFE Headquarters in Wiesbaden. They enjoyed traveling in Europe and especially skiing in several Alpine areas. After 4 years they moved to Beale AFB, California and a new home in Yuba City. When Otto retired from the Air Force, they returned to Spokane and have been happy in their neighborhood for the past 49 years.

Denny served on the board of the Spokane School Volunteer Program and was a classroom assistant at Hutton, Sacajawea, and Lewis & Clark. She was an active member of the Spokane Symphony Associates. She was a member at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist and the St. Nicholas Guild of the Cathedral. The family made many long-lasting friendships though golf at Manito Golf & Country Club and many winter weekends at their small condominium at Schweitzer Mountain.

Survived by husband, Otto, son Jay Frederick and wife Amanda, and grandson, Alexander. Preceded in death by brother, Jay Arthur Ewert.

Service will be held at St John's Cathedral on 10 October at 11am.
