Donald Earl Lewis Obituary (Age 88) Don E. Lewis passed away on May 1, 2018. He was born in Spokane to Charles and Marie (Nagel) Lewis on March 11, 1930. Don�s career as a salesman began at age three, helping brother Bill sell magazines at the county courthouse. Don attended Holmes Elementary, Havermale Middle School and North Central High School. A highlight of his school days was playing on the North Central team that won the state basketball tournament in 1948. Don became lifelong friends with Coach Brumblay and the team members. Don graduated from Washington State College with a B.A. in Business Administration. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and Advertising Manager of the college newspaper. Don met Carol Jean Schmidt at a sorority dance. Honored as a distinguished military student of the ROTC program, Don was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and attended Signal Corps School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Don and Carol Jean were married in 1953 at Red Bank, New Jersey. Don was stationed in Georgia and then deployed to Japan. After discharge, Don was employed as a salesman for Burroughs Corp., selling adding machines and cash registers. Don�s career led him to Walla Walla and then to Wenatchee. By this time, Don and Carol Jean had welcomed their children, Tammy, Terry and Cindy into the family. As Don advanced in Burroughs, there were moves to Los Angeles, Detroit and San Francisco. In 1976, the family returned to Spokane to be near grandparents. With the help of family and friends, Don and Carol Jean constructed a home on Spokane�s South Hill. Don�s career with Sharp Electronics as Regional Manager for the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii had him traveling frequently. His many sales awards and frequent flyer miles created opportunities for Don and Carol Jean to travel abroad and on cruises. Don was a diehard WSU Cougar Club member, loyally attending football games. Go Cougs! He loved going to Gonzaga basketball games. Don golfed, bowled, played basketball and handball. He golfed with lifelong friends in the Indian River golf group. Don played the piano for singalong gatherings with family, friends and Ham-on-Regal parties. His favorite place was Twin Lakes where he spent summers as a child. He loved his pets and the squirrels which he hand-fed. Don was a good-natured, caring person with a positive outlook on life. He was a member of Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bill; his son, Terry; and his son-in-law, Richard. Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol Jean; his daughters, Tammy Sorokin and Cindy Rogers; his grandchildren, Sarah (Noah) Serpinas, Carrie Sorokin, Jesse Garrett, Jerrod Garrett, Katie Garrett, Jedediah Garrett, Skylar Lewis, Dawson Lewis Randall, Brittany Rogers, Colin Rogers and Rebecca Rogers; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The family wants to thank everyone at North Central Care Center for the excellent care and love shown to Don over the last four years. A memorial service will be held on June 3rd at 2pm at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline St., Spokane.
