Donald was born in Jenner, Alberta, Canada on November 4, 1920. He passed away April 19, 2010 in Spokane. He is survived by his wife Nancy Hughes of Spokane; son David Hughes and wife Jackie of Spokane; two daughters, Marlene and husband Jim Stookey of Otis Orchards; Donna and husband LeRoy Ballensky of Coeur d' Alene; 16 grandchildren; Jay, Casey, Pat and Tricia Stookey; Travis, Heidi, Todd and Holly Hughes; Brandy and Aurel Ballensky; Eric, Shawn and Steven Thurman; Stephanie, McKenzie and Brittanie McGurk; four great-grandchildren; one nephew, and four nieces. Donald is preceded in death by his two brothers, Arthur M. Hughes, a B-17 pilot killed in WW II, and Stanley Hughes. He was a lifelong member of the N.E.A., received the Golden Acorn Achievement Award from Shaw Jr. High and Arlington Elementary, and was inducted into Rogers High School's Walk of Fame. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1939 and obtained a B.A Degree in 1947 and a Masters Degree in 1956, both from EWU. Donald served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 during WW II being stationed on Saipan with the Naval Ammo Magazine. After the Navy he taught and coached for 30 years in Spokane at Arlington Elementary, Bemis Elementary, and Shaw Jr. High. Donald retired from teaching in 1977 he then returned to work coaching girls track at Rogers High School for two years. A Memorial Service will be 3:00 PM Friday, April 23, 2010 at Sunset Chapel inside Fairmount Memorial Park.
