Dorothy E. Shore Obituary (Age 100) Dorothy Shore was born September 1, 1916 at Garden City, South Dakota. She moved with her parents to a farm in Burke County in northwestern North Dakota at the age of 2. There, her three brothers and sisters were born. She attended a one-room country school which was a distance away from the farm. Dorothy rode horse to get to school in good weather and bad. In 1929 she graduated from grade school and she had to leave her mother and siblings and move to town to attend Choteau High School, where she graduated from in 1933. At the age 18, Dorothy moved across the state to attend St. Michaels School of Nursing in Grand Forks, North Dakota, attaining her 4-year degree in 1938 as a registered nurse. She worked at St. Vincents Hospital in Crookston, Minnesota where she met and married Leonard Shore on July 27, 1939. The young couple then moved to Devils Lake, North Dakota where Leonard worked for the Great Northern Railway. There, their two sons, Leonard and Thomas were born. Long hours during the war years and pneumonia in winter caused them to look for a warmer climate. With a short stay in Flathead Valley, Montana, they moved further west and settled in Spokane in 1948. There, Dorothy began her long nursing career first working in nursing homes, then the Blood Bank, Deaconess Hospital, Eastern Washington University Infirmary, and Gonzaga University Infirmary. Next she moved to Coulee Dam Community Hospital for a year and finally moving back to Spokane to work for the Sisters of Providence in their infirmary. After 3 years there, she retired on her 65th birthday. Dorothy kept busy in retirement with gardening, volunteering and traveling. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 18 years and checked blood pressures at the Corbin Senior Center for almost as long. She attended Sacred Heart Parish, belonged to the Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees (N.A.R.V.E.), Spokane Orchid Society, Inland Empire Garden Club, the Corbin Senior Center and the South Hill Community Center. She enjoyed seeing other people, customs and countries. Her love of travel and adventure took her to visit Australia, New Zealand, China, most of the countries of Europe - Greece, Turkey, Egypt, the Scandinavia countries, she crossed both the Arctic Circle and the Equator, cruised the Caribbean and Mediterranean, toured Canada and Mexico, Panama Canal to Venezuela. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974; her oldest son Leonard in 2002; and her youngest son, Thomas in 2012. Dorothy leaves behind her three daughters-in-law present and former, Donna Shore, Doris Shore, and Sharon Cheney; seven grandchildren, Thomas Shore, Lorie Naylor-Shore, Mik Shore, Leonard Shore, Greg Shore, Don Shore, and Kelle Kalberg; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Church, 219 E Rockwood Blvd, Spokane, WA. A Rosary will be held prior to the Funeral Mass at 10 am. A Graveside Service will follow at 1 pm at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane, WA.
