Dorothy Ellen Hornig Obituary
(Age 97) Dorothy was born September 23, 1919 and died peacefully on August 1, 2017. Dorothy was born and raised in Omaha, NE. She was the fourth child of George and Rose Martin. She was quite accomplished in high school, having been elected outstanding junior girl and then later being crowned Queen of Achievement. She was quite popular and performed in many plays. Her high school years burned brightly in her memory her whole life. She immediately secured her first job with Travelers Insurance Co. quite unusual since it was the depression and no jobs were available. She met her husband, Edward R. Hornig, on a blind date and eloped with him on October 14,1939. Soon thereafter they began their family. Ed was drafted in the Army in 1943. She had two children during that time and, along with her mother, maintained the family. Ed returned home safely. The family moved to Denver, CO in 1946 where the last two children were born. After Dorothys older brother died at birth, her mother prayed that if God would give her another boy, she would do everything possible to lead him into the ministry. No boy was born Dorothy was. She realized when she was 34 that she had been preaching from the time she accepted Jesus. Her mothers prayer had been answered. Sylvia Guss was one of the recipients of that preaching. She was a neighbor. Sylvia gave her life to Christ and died soon thereafter from a brain tumor. Sylvias daughter was embraced by Dorothy and Ed and became the fifth child of the family. Dorothy served as Administrative Assistant for numerous companies in her working career. Dorothy retired and enjoyed those years with her husband. They moved to Spokane in 2004 to be close to family. Dorothy lived and breathed her relationship with God. Throughout the years, she served in various capacities in each church she was a part of, most recently Beyond Grace Fellowship here in Spokane. She was ever the evangelist and nothing mattered to her except faith matters (except politics). Of course, taking center stage in her life was always her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Making sure the family got together each summer was a yearlong commitment. While Dorothy couldnt go to college because of finances, she was very bright and capable. Her family thinks she should have been a lawyer. God used her elsewhere. At 97, Dorothy is preceded in death by just about everyone most importantly her husband of 74 years, Edward, who died in May of 2013. She also leaves behind a loving family: her children, Karen Soper of Canyon Coutry, CA; Pastor Ed Jr. of Auburn, AL; Jackie (Guss) Moorhead of Aurora, CO; Chris Waggoner of Spokane; and Pastor Mark from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada; in addition to their spouses; she also leaves 19 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her loving caregiver, Ellen Stanger. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 11th from 3-5PM at Heritage Funeral Home. A Celebration of her life will be held at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00AM on Thursday, August 12, 2017.
