Dr. Jack Fowler Obituary Jack received his final wings when he went to be with the Lord July 27, 2009. Surrounded by his large family at home, he passed peacefully and with a smile because he was home. Survived by his wife, Dorothy, sons Tom Fowler, Bainbridge Island, and Dan Fowler, Doylestown, PA; daughter Penny Shephard, Spokane; stepson Keith Thompson, Spokane; stepdaughters, Deborah Huestis, Great Falls, MT, and Trudy Burda, Spokane; grandsons Colin Fowler, Doylestown, PA, Jason Huestis, Great Falls, MT and Harley Huestis, Great Falls, MT, Joe Green, Spokane and Alex Pringle, Cheney, WA; granddaughters, Sarah Fowler, Seattle, WA, Jennifer Davies, Spokane, Lindsey Shephard, Spokane, Kristin Thompson, Mill Creek, WA, Jessica Hyle, Spokane, WA, Megan Stewart, Spokane, Rachel Kleinplaste, Spokane and 12 great-grandchildren. Jack was born a farm boy south of Spokane. After graduating from High School in LaMont, he attended Cheney College for a year, went on to WSU before entering military Dental School at Washington University in St. Louis. He left the military as a Captain in the Army Air Force, opening his own practice in 1949 that spanned 50 years. Jack was a man of many talents: Doctor of Dentistry, Missionary Dentist, skier, airplane pilot, airplane builder, auto restorer, and aerial photographer. He supported Dorothy in her creation of bronze sculptures. He was the founder of Schweitzer Ski Area near Sandpoint, ID in 1963. He was an avid contributor to the First Presbyterian Church in Spokane and the Schweitzer Chapel and Youth Center adjoining the ski area. The story of the founding of Schweitzer Ski Area was published in 1991 as told by Jack to Ross Woodward, Spokane newscaster. It reveals his untiring dedication, working through the many difficulties. A special ski run "Jack's Dream" bears his name in commemoration of his contributions. Jack became a pilot in 1960. He built a Marquart Charger, a bi-wing, open cockpit airplane for Dorothy, who is also a pilot. He rebuilt nine airplanes. He loved the Waco's. He often could be seen flying his Waco from his dental office adjoining Felts Field to his landing field adjoining his home near Marshall. He was an active member of the EAA and hosted 42 annual fly-ins each year at his home. Jack flew with Dorothy many years to Guatemala as a dental missionary. He was a special friend to many through his participation in his activities. Family, however, was especially important to him. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 3rd, at First Presbyterian Church in Spokane, at 2:00 PM. Graveside service at Spokane Memorial Gardens Cemetery follows. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Schweitzer Chapel, 1053 Mogul Hill, Sandpoint, ID 83864.
