Ed T. Iwata Obituary
(Age 90)
Ed T. Iwata was reunited with his loving wife, Kiyo on July 26, 2010 in time for their 65th anniversary. Born on July 12, 1920 on a farm in Tacoma, Ed spent most of his childhood years working the fields and produce markets near Firwood, WA. He graduated from Puyallup High School in 1938, but his real knowledge came from an understanding of nature, the outdoors and fishing. He would improvise bamboo fishing poles and fish for trout, perch, catfish, steelhead and the mighty salmon near the Narrows Bridge. Ed worked for several years at the Longbell Sawmill in Lonview, WA before returning to Tacoma in 1940 to help his parents operate a produce store located near Point Defiance Park. During the war, Ed was interned in temporary quarters at Puyllap Fairgrounds; harvested sugar beets in northern Montana and at Minnedoka until the spring of 1943. He moved to Spokane where he met and married Kiyo, and they raised 5 children. Ed?s construction company built many homes and business in the Spokane area, including the Highland Park United Methodist Church. In 1970 Ed moved to Bothell where he worked in the Facility Planning Department of the Northshore School District until his retirement in 1975. As an avid fisherman, Ed enjoyed his many activities at Point No Point: fishing, claming and gardening. Ed has been reunited in new life with his wife Kiyo. He was also preceded in death by his parents and brother Tom. He is survived by his brother Kay (and Marty) of Sparks, NV; son Eddie (and Michael Marie) of Anchorage, AK; daughters Shirley (and Skip Hancock) of Spokane, Donna (and Larry Sieker) of Mount Vernon, WA, Susan Iwata of Spokane and Judy (and Keith Smith of Young, AZ; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. To honor his life, Ed?s children will have an open house Celebration of Life at the church Ed built, Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield, on Tuesday, August 3rd anytime between 2:00 and 4:00 PM. Burial services will be in Seattle on a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Autumn Years Manito, 212 E. Manito PL., Spokane, WA 99203 where Ed spend the last 1-1/2 years of his life.
