Edward G. Cuzzetto, Jr.

August 27, 1929 - March 10, 2010

Edward G. Cuzzetto, Jr. Obituary (Age 80) Passed away and went to be with our Lord on March 10, 2010 in Spokane, Washington. He was born on August 27, 1929 to Edward G. and Estelle Cuzzetto in Spokane and was a third generation Spokanite. Ed attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Gonzaga Prep. In 1943 at the age of 13, Ed worked at Safeway bagging groceries. In 1944 he worked for the United Truck Lines until World War II ended. In 1946 he returned to Safeway and began his career as a meat cutter. In 1947 he helped to secure a 40 hour work week for union members. In 1952 Ed became a business agent for Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen Local 494 and held that position until 1956 when he returned to Safeway as a meat cutter. In 1969 he returned to Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen Local 494 and eventually became the Recording Secretary. He retired in 1980 when Local 494 merged and became UFCW Local 1439. During his tenure he was a part of many important negotiations that affect the local union today. Ed had a deep compassion for the working people of Spokane. Some of Ed's favorite pastimes were playing golf and watching sports, especially baseball and Gonzaga basketball. During his lifetime, he enjoyed working on race cars and antique cars. He always enjoyed talking about the history of Spokane and the good old days over a cup of coffee. Ed is survived by his six children, Carlyn (Lloyd) Jozwiak, Susan (John) Knight, Kevin (Moon) Cuzzetto, Gerene Brewer, Laura (Pat) Boyle, Bernadette (Douglass)Townsend; one brother, Robert Cuzzetto; and two sisters, Leola Gleason and Elaine Jennings-Williams. He will be missed by his sixteen grandchildren: Randee (Michael) Sims, Ricci (Jared) Robert, Brianne, Rachelle and Robert Brewer, Jeremiah and David (Amanda) Knight, Sarahanne, Gerene, Andrew, Thomas, Sophia and Emily Townsend, Conner Boyle, and Richard and John Jozwiak; six great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his son Edward Roderick Cuzzetto and daughter Mary Margaret Cuzzetto; also Bernita Garvey and Beverly Cuzzetto. The family would like to thank Hospice House. A memorial service will be held at Sunset Chapel, Fairmount Memorial Park on Saturday, March 20 at 1:00 pm to honor the life of Edward G. Cuzzetto, Jr.
