June 21, 1928 – October 26, 2024
Spokane, Washington
Eleanor “Jean” Hodge, beloved daughter, mother, sister, aunt, grandma and great grandmother to a large family, died October 26, 2024 from a hemorrhagic stroke. With the help of her beloved son, Ron Hodge, Jean was able to live independently in her own home. She had the support of loving caregivers and her family by her side. She was 96.
Born the youngest of four children to John Stanton Holmquist and Martha Kjer, of Lewistown, Montana on June 21, 1928, she lost her mother at the age of 6. She was raised by her father, her brother Earl Holmquist, her sisters Eileen Darlow and, especially, Dorothy Hyndman. After high school, Jean moved to live with Dorothy in Vancouver, Washington, where she attended Clark College. Jean was the beloved Widow of Donald Ernest Hodge (gone too soon in 1976); beloved Mom of Ron Hodge and Vicki Pfouts; beloved Grandma of Ron, Andria, Michael, Jeremy, Stephanie and Haley; and beloved Great-Grandma to Abbi, Kylie, Ozias, Ellison, Taryn, Easton, Mallory and Sienna.
Jean was a homemaker until her husband, Donald Ernest Hodge, died in 1976. After “Don” passed, she went to work as a receptionist and administrative assistant for the Treasurer’s Office for Washington State in Olympia, where she eventually retired to spend time in the outdoors and with her family in the Spokane area. Throughout her adult life she enjoyed travel, camping, fishing, boating, gardening, baking banana bread and family games, especially cards, where she could get a little competitive! She also enjoyed a fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with her daughter Vicki who turned her into a fine wine connoisseur.
Jean is survived by her son Ron Hodge, daughter Vicki Pfouts, two nephews, three nieces, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Stanton Holmquist and Martha Kjer, brother Earl Holmquist, sisters Eileen Darlow, Dorothy Hyndman, and her husband Donald Ernest Hodge.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at Vicki’s home in Mead, Washington in the late spring or early summer of 2025 next door to the lovely home where Jean lived enjoying the beautiful view of the Peone Valley. She loved watching the eagles, deer and all the wildlife surrounding the property.
Our family wishes to thank the wonderful team of doctors and nurses at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane for their compassionate, loving care. We would also like to thank Megan for her loving, unwavering care of Mom in her home over the last eight months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the Make a Wish Foundation.
