Eva Florence Callahan Obituary (Age 85) On April 26, 2017, after a brief battle with Leukemia, Eva Florence Callahan drew her last breath at Hospice House of Spokane and passed away painlessly and peacefully. She was a sweet and caring person who was much loved by her family and friends. Eva was born in Red Lodge, MT on August 2, 1931 to Abel and Hilda Saastamoinen. She was the youngest of 15 children, 10 of whom survived to adulthood. She attended school in Red Lodge and Seattle, then joined the Marine Corps in 1952. Eva married Neil Callahan in 1954 and gave birth to a son, Patrick Callahan in 1955. The family moved around the Western US several times, with both parents working as defense contractors in the Cold War Missile Industry, eventually settling in Spokane in 1963. Eva went to work for EWSC, which was later renamed EWU and retired in 1997 after 30 years. She attended Whitworth Presbyterian Church for several decades and made a number of friends there. Eva and Neil were divorced in 1975. Eva is survived by one sister, Martha Sasten and her son, Patrick Callahan. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bertha Sasten, Rayola Danicheck, Edna Sasten and Viola Kent; brothers, Arthur Saastamoinen, Charles Saastamoinen, John Warren and Dan Sasten. Eva was cremated and will be interred at Riverside Memorial Park. Her memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 11th at 2pm at Whitworth Presbyterian Church 312 W. Hawthorne Rd., Spokane, WA 99218. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice House of Spokane, who took excellent care of Eva in her final days and were a source of great comfort in the familys time of need.
