Fern G. Showacre Obituary
(Age 95)
Fern was born in Libby, MT on July 24, 1914 to Amadee Joseph and Marie Gendreau and joined them in eternal rest on February 3, 2010. She attended Hillyard H.S. and was a life-long and eager learner, ever inquisitive until days before her death. Her marriage to John A. Phipps produced 3 children, Beverly Lindemuth, Lucille England and Judith Phipps. Sadly, Beverly and Lucille preceded their mother in death. Fern's broad interests and can-do approach enhanced her natural abilities. She was: the first manager of Spokane's first coliseum box office/ticket office, an LPN working during WWII and the Red Cross polio-era facilities, a fashion show coordinator for the Edna Perry Home Shopping Service at the old Bon Marche, a producer for the local TV show Pride of the Empire and an ESL tutor for First Presbyterian Barton School benefiting Vietnamese immigrants. In the early years of Spokane Civic Theatre, mom, as did many other volunteers, wore various hats as board member in support of the fledgling organization. Fern finished her career as receptionist at the old Rockwood Clinic when she married Robert M. Showacre. She and Bob enjoyed numerous trips in their retirement which included Canada, Hawaii and Turkey. They were members of First Presbyterian Church in Spokane. Ever young at heart she took her first (and last) hot air balloon ride on her 80th birthday. Fern is survived by her daughter Judith Phipps and grandson Andrew J. Phipps of Spokane, sisters Marcella Chronister of Spokane and Barbara O'Neill of Freemont, CA; eight grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Robert, daughters Beverly and Lucille; brothers Amadee J. Gendreau Jr. and Harold L. Gendreaux; sisters Lucille and Suzanne Gendreau, Evelyn Chapin and Maxine Bogenreif. Memorial Service 1:00PM Friday February 12, 2010 at Heritage Chapel. She was the Grand Matriarch of our parent's family of nine. We love and will always miss you. You will remain in our hearts and minds. - AND HAVE THE ORANGE ROLLS READY! Memorial Contributions may be made to the Spokane Humane Society or the Union Gospel Mission.
