Flora M. Smick

December 14, 1947 - June 14, 2018

Flora M. Smick Obituary (Age 89) Flora was born in Spokane December 14, 1928 to Harry E. and Della M. Wood. Mrs. Smick graduated from North Central High School in 1947. She worked as a legal secretary for various attorneys� offices and as an administrative secretary to the superintendent of schools in the West Valley School District. In 1965, she began attending evening classes at Whitworth College. She entered Eastern Washington University in 1968, graduating with honors in 1970. Mrs. Smick began teaching at Mead Junior High in 1970. She completed her Masters Degree in 1976 and became a counselor at Mead Junior High in 1977, she retired in January 1989. She married Robert G. Smick in 1975. Their travels included Europe and South America, as well as many places in the U.S. Elderhostels were an activity enjoyed by both. After retirement, Mrs. Smick volunteered to be a Guardian Ad Litem for the Juvenile Court System for two years, as well as joining the Joyettes Chorus, the Happy Feet Cloggers, and the Senior Serenaders, all entertainment groups belonging to Project Joy. Mrs. Smick also sang with her church choir for several years. Music was a major interest in her life. Flora�s memberships included Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Washington State Education Association, National Education Association, Compass Club and Project Joy. She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Smick; three sons: Steven Robert Benham and his wife Karen, of Kennewick, WA, Dean Edwin Benham and Kathy Benham, of Maple Falls and Spokane, WA and Thomas Dale Benham of Maple Falls, WA; four grandchildren: Mariah Murray (Eric) of Spokane, WA, Bryce Benham (Alissa) of Maple Falls, WA, RaeAnn Benham of Seattle, WA and Emily Benham of Marysville, WA and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Jean Schaul of Heber, AZ, and brother Jerry Wood of Tigard, OR. She was preceded in death by her brother Dale Wood and her sister Susan Atkins. Mrs. Smick is a long-time member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Memorials may be sent to Project Joy, 3151 E 27th Ave., Spokane WA 99223, or Messiah Lutheran Church, 4202 N. Belt, Spokane WA 99205.
