Gary O'Dell

March 15, 2018 - March 15, 2018

Gary O'Dell Obituary Gary ODell passed away on March 15, 2018, after a long battle with early onset Alzheimers disease. He was born 71 years ago, the first of two sons, to Jack D and Winifred G ODell. His father was a decorated WWII veteran and career military man, so most of Garys childhood was spent moving from one army town to another. I lived in 22 places during the first 20 years of my life, he would say proudly. In every new town he participated in the Boy Scouts, and as an adult he volunteered with the Scouts in several capacities for many years. The other constant in his life was regular church attendance and a deep faith and trust in God through Jesus Christ. Gary earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering at Wichita State University and an MS in EE from the University of Missouri. He became a microwave specialist while working at the Bendix Corporation in Kansas City, MO, and at Lockheed Martin in Denver, Colorado. Much of his work was classified but he also worked on unclassified projects which put satellites in space to support defense programs, the Venus Mapper and the Mars Probe. Gary loved the wilderness and seemed never happier than when backpacking or canoeing, sleeping in a tent and watching the stars in a very dark sky. He loved bagpipes and castles, folk music and dogs and was an amateur astronomer. He loved playing strategy games and building blanket forts to have elaborate battles with nerf guns. More than anything else, he loved his son, John, his former wife, Jean, his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, and his six beautiful grandchildren. Memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimers Association or the Rocky Mountain Conservancy. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Gary, please visit our Tree Store.
