Gayle Evelyn (Halverson) Reid Obituary Born November 29, 1924, five miles south of Port Orchard, WA, she was the third of four children born to John and Mary Halverson. She grew up during the Great Depression. Between their dairy cows, garden and picking berries they always seemed to have enough money to meet their needs and food to eat. Graduating from South Kitsap High School in 1942 she obtained a job as a sheet metal shop tool checker at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. A good looking 21-year-old named Tom Reid, noticed her and he asked her for a wrench and her phone number. He got the wrench, but Tom wasnt easily deterred. Tom joined the Army Air Force in late 1943 and, after his initial training, married Gayle in March of 1945. Tom shipped to Guam to work on B-29 radars. Gayle stayed with her parents in Port Orchard for the duration, eventually discovering that she was going to have a baby. In 1946, they moved to East Wenatchee where Tom worked at Reid Pump and Supply. Gayle had two more children, ran the small orchard and dealt with rattlesnakes. Tragically, daughter Janet died of cancer at age 5, but through this Gayle came to faith in Jesus as her Savior, as did her family. Gayle helped with the youth group, taught Sunday school and helped at CYC summer camps. In the mid-1960s Gayle and Tom adopted two children in two years essentially starting a family all over again. Gayle continued to be an integral operator in the family orchard, taking kids to 4-H, being an active member of her church and neighborhood Bible study. In 1994, ten years after retiring, Gayle and Tom moved to the Spokane area. Gayle was a good friend, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her molasses cookies were almost always available wherever she lived. She passed away November 15, 2017, two weeks shy of her 93rd birthday. While she will be missed, we rejoice knowing that her life has touched so many people. She is survived by four children, Jim Reid, Nancy Jagla, Gary Reid and Margot Turner; fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. A funeral service will be held Monday, December 11, 2017, 1:00pm, at Heritage Funeral Home in Spokane. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Gayle, please visit our Tree Store.
