Glen Louis Whiteley Obituary
Glen Louis Whiteley passed away on December 1, 2015, in Spokane, Washington. Glen was born on February 21, 1929 in Walla Walla, Washington, to Earl and Viola Whiteley. He was the fourth of five boys. Glen attended Berny Grade school and later Braden School, a two-room school house. He graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1947. He attended Eastern Washington College for three years before joining the Army Medical Corps. Glen served two years as a neuro-psychiatric case worker in Landstuhl, Germany. It was there that he met Hazel, an army nurse, and his future wife. He returned to college after the service, and after graduation he and Hazel were married in Walla Walla, Washington, on Christmas day, 1954. Glen earned a second degree and taught Art, History, and Psychology in high school for a year before joining the Spokane County Sheriff's Office. He served in patrol and radio, as well as the Identification Bureau where he became an expert in photography, fingerprinting and as a sketch artist. He was also a professional photographer on the side, with 'Whiteley Studio' in the basement of their home. He took many portraits, and wedding photographs, as well as photographs of many famous personalities. He later served as official Photographer for Expo ?74 and managed two on-site camera stores during Expo. For 13 years, he worked at the Department of Corrections as Supervisor of Records and Identification at Pine Lodge Correctional Center, in Medical Lake. He retired in 1991. Glen was the Founder, Curator & President of the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum. He had many hobbies, including collecting cameras, and photographic memorabilia, restoring and collecting antique automobiles, and establishing the museum, including the collecting of countless artifacts for that endeavor. He and Hazel were active members of several different car clubs, and took their vintage automobiles to fairs, parades, ceremonies, educational events, as well as tours. His two Model T's and his Model A are now part of the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum. Glen was preceded in death by his wife Hazel, who died Dec. 3, 2011, and his brothers Harold, Darrell, and Virgil. He is survived by daughter Sally Mungaray (Mike) of Brea, CA, daughter Susan Whiteley of Nepal/Thailand, granddaughters Anastasia & Alexandra Mungaray of Brea, CA, and his brother Donald of Challis, Idaho. Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum (Building Fund), 924 W. Sinto Ave, Spokane, WA 99201. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. A graveside service will be on Tuesday December 29, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Washington State Veterans Cemetery, 21702 W. Espanola Road, Medical Lake, WA.
