Gloria Joyce Martin

September 26, 1924 - April 02, 2010

Gloria Joyce Martin Obituary Passed into the loving arms of her heavenly father on April 2, 2010. Gloria was born to Sigurd and Ethel Wold on September 26, 1926, in Tacoma Washington. She grew up in Tacoma then attended Bible college in Eugene, Oregon. In Eugene, she met and married Robert Martin, the love of her life, in March of 1948. Their lives together took them to Broadus, Montana where she lived her dream of being a pastor's wife. She spent her time teaching music and caring for the children of the community. After several years in Broadus, they moved to Great Falls where they were blessed with their two children, Doug and Jeanette. In 1969, Gloria and her children followed her dear friends, Arlee and LaVerne Peterson, to Corvallis, Montana, in the heart of the Bitterroot Valley. While there she started the Friendship House Christian Library, which later became the Chapter One Bookstore. She taught piano, violin, cello and accordion to many accomplished students. She loved to spend time in the mountains and enjoy their beauty. After several years in the Bitterroot Valley, Gloria moved to Spokane to be close to her aging parents. During her time in Spokane she was the Director of Anna Ogden Hall, continuing her life long dream of ministering to women in need. She was on the Women's Auxiliary of the Union Gospel Mission and served with many charitable organizations. Wherever she lived, she had a beautiful yard and loved nurturing the soil to produce beautiful flowers, berries and fruit trees. At the close of gardening season she would preserve the fruits of her labors in delicious jams, sauces and baked goods to be shared with her friends. During the fall and winter she loved to sew, quilt and make crafts for her friends and family. Gloria was a loving and caring person, who carried the spirit of Christ with her in all endeavors. She loved her family and friends, but would also help anyone in need with the same devotion. Her home was always open to anyone who needed help, a meal, or simply some love and counsel. She adored animals and welcomed many with open arms over the years. Greeting her in heaven are her parents, her husband, her brother Gordon, her niece Brenda, her nephew Tim, cousin Mickey and many loving friends. She is survived by her children, Doug of Portland, Jeanette (and husband Kevin) in Spokane, her grandchildren Levi and Haley of Spokane, Nicole (and fianc? Casey) of Coeur d'Alene, her great-grandchildren Veronica and Casey of Coeur d'Alene, her brother David (and wife Bernie) of Portland, her brother Glenn of Spokane, and sister-in-law Maybetta of Spokane, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family offers a very special thanks to Sue and Ron Allen, as well as Gloria's special buddy, Josh Allen, for their loving and heroic care over the last four years. They were wonderful caregivers, and their compassion and understanding are very much appreciated. Gloria, we will all miss you in this life but know you will be waiting for us in heaven. Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 1:00pm, at the Valley 4th Church, 2303 S. Bowdish Road, Spokane Valley, WA. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Union Gospel Mission for Anna Ogden Hall or the Valley 4th Church for their Missionaries.
