Gordon H. Smith

1930-2025

Gordon Harrison Smith, 94, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

A lifetime resident of Spokane, Gordon was born in 1930 to Austin Tipton Smith and Florence Edna Harrison Smith in a small house on North Perry Street. Gordon attended Logan Elementary School and graduated in 1948 from Rogers High School.

After graduation, he worked alongside his father in his dad's lumber mill, until 1952 when he went to work as a telegrapher for the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Burlington Northern Railroad, taking an early retirement in 1990 to pursue hobbies and traveling.

Gordon married Grace Tysdal in 1956, and the couple had two daughters. He was a loving husband and father. Gordon and Grace loved camping and traveling with family and friends and had many adventures and trips together, near and far. They loved to go by car, motorhome, boat and airplane to see new things and meet new people. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Grace in 2002.

A few years later, Gordon continued his traveling adventures with his new companion, Jackie Anderson, and they enjoyed traveling and meeting new people together.

Gordon was a hardworking, faithful man who loved the Lord and loved people. He was a member of Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. He was a loyal friend, a wonderful and involved parent and grandpa. Gordon never hesitated to jump in and help in any situation. If he saw a need, he would make time to help, even if he was never asked to do so. He always had a smile on his face and a positive and sunny attitude, even in the midst of challenges. He was extremely patient and always more concerned about others than himself. He was so thoughtful and generous with his time, his resources, his wit and his stories!

Gordon is survived by his daughters, Sue Smith and Diane Smith, of Burien and Spokane. He is also survived by 6 granddaughters, Kyla Lizardo (Alex), Megan Crom (David), Macie Schadewitz (Casey), Janna Smith, Meaghan Shell and Lauren Crom.

A Celebration of Life service will be held later this spring at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. Private inurnment was held at the Rose Garden, and Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you initiate a random act of kindness in Gordon's honor.
