Grace Barbara Nettles Davenport Obituary Grace Davenport was born in Romeo, Florida to Joseph Charles Nettles Sr. and Ruby Sherouse Nettles. Grace had two older brothers, a younger brother, and two older sisters. Growing up in Florida in the 1920s and 30s provided a fun, carefree childhood for Grace and her siblings. Grace was a stunning beauty, turning heads wherever she went, and she had many suitors in her youth; but only one man captured her heart. One day Grace met a girlfriend for lunch in a little cafe in Tallahassee. Suddenly, a tall, handsome, young soldier walked into the restaurant and strode over to their table. He and Grace locked eyes. Since Graces friend knew the young man, she made introductions. Much to their surprise, Oscar (Dave) Davenport slid into the booth next to Grace. Later, he offered to walk her home. It wasnt long after their first meeting that the young couple became engaged. It was war time and romances blossomed quickly back then. Unfortunately, their marriage plans had to be put on hold when Dave was shipped to the Panama Canal Zone. During Daves two-year overseas assignment, Grace decided to do something useful for our country. In a wave of patriotism, Grace joined the Army Air Corp where she worked as a nutritionist. When Dave returned, they were married and had three children: Patricia, Wayne, and Randy. Family and friends were always impressed by their love and devotion to one another. Grace was known as a classy, elegant southern belle. One niece said, Aunt Grace always looked like she just stepped out of a hatbox. Dave became a career military man. With Graces talent in interior design, she created many stylish homes in their moves with the USAF. The Davenports moved from Florida to Spokane in 1984 to be closer to family. Grace is survived by her daughter, Pat, and son-in-law, Tony Fechner, of Spokane; son, Wayne Davenport of Las Vegas; and son, Randy Davenport and his wife, Chong, of Lacey, WA. She has 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Mama, we miss you and are so happy you are now in your heavenly home. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 401 W Regina Ave, Spokane, WA 99218 followed by a Graveside Service at Riverside Memorial Park at 2:30 pm. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Grace, please visit our Tree Store.
