Harold Eugene Granlund

August 22, 1921 - May 17, 2013

Harold Eugene Granlund Obituary Harold Eugene Granlund passed away on May 17, 2013 at the Spokane Veterans Home at the age of 91. Earlier in the day, he had a nice visit with his family, viewing old family photos, and reminiscing happily of days gone by. Harold was born on August 22, 1921, in Troy, ID to Gust and Ebba Granlund and grew up on the family farm during the Depression. Times were hard but families shared a special closeness with wholesome, good values. He attended Bear Creek Grade School between the first and eighth grades and showed an early intelligence by advancing two grades in one year. Harold attended Troy High School and graduated in 1938. He then attended the University of Idaho where he received a degree in Business Administration. He entered the Coast Guard in 1942 (attending Basic Training in Quilcene, WA) during World War II and later transferred to the Navy. He was commissioned as an Ensign and later became a Lieutenant. He was a part of the Navy for approximately 20 years, remaining in the active reserves. Harold served as needed throughout the world. He eventually settled in Spokane after the war and became Bank Manager at Old National Bank for many years. Later Harold worked for Spokane County in the Assessor's Office. He was a member of the Spokane First Presbyterian Church. Harold enjoyed a full life, traveling extensively, and enjoying a special closeness with family and friends, visiting, and attending gatherings. He tremendously enjoyed watching all sports, played golf and horseshoes. He belonged to a bowling league, and faithfully enjoyed riding his beloved bicycle, not giving it up until his very later years. Harold was an avid reader, collected matchbooks during his years of travel, and was especially sentimental, keeping and treasuring cards and letters, photographs, programs of special events, and other memorabilia. Harold was especially enthused to have been chosen to go to Washington DC on "Honor Flight" several years ago, a special tribute to Veterans. Harold was preceded in death by a younger sister who died tragically on the family farm at the age of five, Eileen, and by brothers Vernon (Lois) of Troy, ID and Earl (Agnes) of Torrance, CA. Harold leaves behind his youngest brother, Gordon (Rosemarie) of Clarkston, WA. Harold shared a special closeness with his cousins and their families. He had many nieces and nephews and genuinely enjoyed catching up with all of them whenever possible and hearing about their lives. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 23rd at 11:00 am at Heritage Funeral Home in Spokane. He will be laid to rest at the Dry Creek Cemetery in Troy, ID, near his parents, sister, and other family members and friends. Memorial Contributions may be made in Harold?s name to the Spokane Veterans Home, 222 E 5th Ave, Spokane, WA 99202. Harold's family is very grateful for the good and kind care provided by the Spokane Veterans Home during his final days.
