Hilda (Loveman) Wilson

Hilda (Loveman) Wilson Obituary (Age 98) Passed away on December 16, 2013 in Spokane. Hilda Garson Loveman was born into a prominent Jewish family in Chattanooga, TN in 1915. Her grandfather D.B. Loveman founded the first department store in Chattanooga, called Loveman?s. She attended Girl?s Preparatory School in Chattanooga and then Barnard College in 1932 where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Government Affairs in 1937. After graduation she was hired by Newsweek Magazine and for the next ten years worked as a researcher, writer and editor, and for the last five years as Art News Editor. Highlights of her career include interviewing Jackson Pollack, Robert Motherwell and Diego Rivera. In 1945, after he arrived home from serving in the US Army during World War II she married Leo Wilson, a noted obstetrician and gynecologist. They were together for 59 years until his death in 2004 also at the age of 98. They had two daughters Melanie and Nancy and when they were born Hilda stopped working and devoted herself to raising them. They moved to Larchmont, NY in 1960 where she became active at Planned Parenthood, the PTA and the League of Women Voters. She always considered herself a writer and wrote for the Barnard College Magazine, The Friends of the Reservoir Newsletter in Larchmont and was the very first secretary for Jewish Family Service in Spokane. Hilda is survived by her daughters and their spouses Melanie and Alan Levitan of New Jersey and Nancy and Dr. Curt Wickre of Spokane; grandson Joel Vikre and his wife Emily and new great-grandson Espen of Duluth, MN and her grandson Ryan Wickre of San Francisco. Funeral Service 10AM Thursday December 19, 2013 at Heritage Chapel with interment following at Mt Nebo Cemetery. The family requests that donations be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center or Planned Parenthood.
