Hilma Vaikonpaa

April 13, 1921 - March 30, 2009

Hilma Vaikonpaa Obituary On the afternoon of March 30th, 2009, Hilma Vaikonpaa passed away from this world due to complications from Alzheimer's. She is now in the loving care of our Lord. Born to Kusti and Selma Rajaniemi on April 13, 1921, in a small village in northern Finland, she outlived eight brothers and sisters. In 1955, she immigrated with her family to Canada and lived in Toronto and Thunder Bay, Ontario. They moved to North Hollywood, California in 1964; and finally ended up in Spokane in 1966. Besides helping her husband in his construction business, she always kept a tidy home and was THE babysitter for her three grandsons. There was always the aroma of tasty Finnish dishes in her kitchen, but it was the Christmas cookies, coffee cakes and rolls that were the big hit with her family and friends; and each year everyone got warm, wool socks that she had knit. She had an infectious laugh that only got louder when she laughed at herself. She leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Toivo; daughter, Laila (Doug) Kaer; son, Esse; grandsons Jon (Sydney) Kaer in Bellingham, Washington; Ben (Heather) Kaer; and Chris Kaer in Spokane; as well as Alex and Lena, her great-granddaughters; plus numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends in Canada and Finland. She is loved by all of us and is already greatly missed. The family is deeply grateful to Candlelight Home and Hospice of Spokane for their kindness and incredible support during this time. A small, intimate graveside service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in the Garden of Inspiration at 4:00 PM on Friday, April 3rd, 2009. Friends and family can go to www.heritagefunerals.com to sign the guest book online.
