Howard Robert Gruenig Obituary Howard Robert Gruenig was born to Rube and Elizabeth Gruenig on Feb. 4, 1926, at home near Platte, SD. It was there, on a farm, where he was raised. At 18, he joined the Navy serving in the Pacific on an LST, until war's end. In 1947 Howard married Marie Young, which began a 68 year adventure. Their family grew with the addition of their son, Craig in 1948, and daughter, Starlene in 1950. He was a man of many talents, which was so evident in his many endeavors in the work force. He put all his energy into what he did, and he did it well, from farmer, business owner, construction worker and supervisor. Because he led by example and respect, his crews reciprocated with respect as well, often going the extra mile without question. During the years that Howard lived in Platte, one of his passions was bird hunting, usually with a trusty hunting dog by his side. His love for fishing was life-long and he and Marie frequented their favorite fishing spots in the northwest up until about 5 years ago, as his health began to fail. There have been many conversations over the years of who caught the biggest or most fish. Howard lived his life, as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and brother with his own unique style. He was a loyal, loving, hard working man, who lived life his way. Among his greatest joys, were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A certain twinkle came to his eyes as he held many conversations or debates with those little ones. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at Sunset Chapel, Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W.
