In Loving Memory of Lula M. Gildemann

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Lula Marie Gildemann on January 17, 2025, at the age of 89. Lula had faced the debilitating challenges of dementia over the past several years. Born on January 5, 1936, in Greene County, Virginia, Lula was the eighth child of Jack and Gladys Meadows, growing up in a humble rural home with eleven siblings.

In 1952, Lula met Oscar Gildemann, and they subsequently married in 1953 and began a journey that would see them moving across the country from Virginia to Southern California, back to Virginia, and then eventually settling in Pullman, Washington in 1966. Together, they raised five children.

Lula worked at the Washington State University telecommunications office for about 15 years starting in the late 1970s and then she and Oscar moved to Spokane in the early-1990s during their retirement years.

Lula was a generous, loving, and supportive mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on so many. She cherished big family gatherings, particularly Thanksgiving and other holidays, where she enjoyed the company of her loved ones and the delicious food that brought them together.

In her spare time, Lula had a passion for gardening, with a special interest in English gardens and learning the history of the British Royal family. She found joy in the beauty of a colorful garden and the stories of the past.

Lula is survived by her five children, in order of birth: Melody (Faris), Merrily (McPherson), Gregg, Melinda (Utz), and Glenn. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Lula was preceded in death by her husband Oscar in 2009.

We will forever remember Lula’s sense of humor, generosity, and feisty spirit. Her legacy will continue to remain with us, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service to celebrate Lula’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 31, at Red Bench Bible Church in Spokane, Washington. A brief graveside gathering will follow at 3pm at the Pullman City Cemetery.
