Ivar Aspebakken Obituary (Age 87) Passed away at Valley Hospital in Spokane Valley, Washington on August 29, 2009. He is survived by his two children, John Aspebakken of Benbrook, Texas and Helen Scherer of Shawnee, Kansas, as well as his two brothers, Lars Aspebakken of Biristrand, Norway and Helge Aspebakken of Drammen, Norway, and his dear friend, Verdelle O'Neill, of Spokane Valley. Ivar was born in Biristrand, Norway on October 11, 1921. As a young man he worked on various fox farms and served in the Norwegian military. In 1948 he immigrated to the United States. He worked on wheat farms near Williston, North Dakota and Froid, Montana in the vicinity of his aunt, Anna Mork, her children and other relatives. In 1953, his long time fianc?e, Marit Nordheim, immigrated from ?yer, Norway, and they were married on December 27th. In 1955, they moved to the Missoula, Montana area, where Ivar hired on for the Northern Pacific Railway. In 1969, he was transferred to Spokane, Washington, where he worked as a roadmaster for the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1985. Ivar was a member of the Sons of Norway for many years, and also the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association. He will be remembered for his strength of independence, compassion and generosity. Viewing on Thursday, September 3rd, from 2:00-5:00 PM, and Friday, September 4th, from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM at Heritage. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 4th, 1:00 PM at Heritage.
