Janis was born in Spokane, Washington on September 18, 1942. She lived nearly all of her life in Spokane, but spent eight years of her childhood living in Saudi Arabia where her father worked.
During her time abroad she and her family traveled Europe and the Middle East. Her schooling included reading, writing and speaking French and Arabic. She had a passion for horses and loved riding and caring for them at a nearby stable. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1960 and married Les that summer. They were married for 45 years until his death in 2005. She earned a Secretarial Science Certificate from Kinman Business University, two Associate Degrees and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business from Eastern Washington University (1991). Additionally, she was a member and/or an officer of several professional organizations. Most of all, however, she completely dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was an absolutely loving and devoted mother and was involved in everything her boys were involved in: Sunday School teacher, Cub Scout Leader, Little League, Boy Scouts, Percussionaut Patriots, Silver Spurs, Central Valley Parent Group, Football, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Stage Band, Symphonic Band, Honor Society, and more.
