Jean Irene Smith Obituary
(Age 90) Born March 19, 1920 in Valley, WA, the descendant of a pioneer family, Jean passed away peacefully at Sacred Heart Hospital on July 5, 2010. Following graduation from Lewis & Clark High School, Jean attended Whitman College, where she was affiliated with Delta Gamma sorority. Prior to her marriage, Jean worked at Dodson's and for a flying service at Felts Field. She was an expert equestrian in her youth and an amateur pilot under the tutelage of her uncle, Maj. Gen H. R. Wallace. She was an avid gardener, golfer, and volunteer throughout her life. Jean was a long-time member of the Spokane Country Club, the Spokane Club, and devoted member of St. John's Cathedral, where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She continued to be active in Delta Gamma and in 1997 was awarded their prestigious Cable Award. A lifelong volunteer and philanthropist, she was a member of Friends of the Davenport and Friends of Manito and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Jean and her family lived all over the world and she and her husband continued to travel extensively after their retirement from the Air Force. Most recently Jean was a resident of the Waterford. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. (ret.) Robert Clarke Smith and her parents Earl Winfield Scott and Larene (Wallace) Thompson. She is survived by her sons Hal Clarke Smith and Earl Robert Smith, her daughter and son-in-law Sally and Ken Ryan, and her grandson Jonathan Ryan. A Memorial Service will be held July 29th at 2:00 PM at St. John's Cathedral with a reception to follow at 3:30 at The Waterford on South Hill. The Graveside Service will be July 30th at 4:00 PM at Riverside Park Cemetery.
