John C. Hilsen Obituary John passed away June 20, 2009. He was born in Newport, WA, on May 23, 1931, to Arthur Hilsen and Elizabeth Jones Hilsen. He graduated from John R. Rogers High School in June 1949. While in high school, he worked for his father at Hilsen Aero Service. John attended Stanford University from 1949 to 1953 and graduated with a B.S. in History. He married Violet M. Rhodes on March 31, 1951. They had three children, Sandra Jo, Thomas Arthur, and Timothy James. He worked for several companies over the years including IBM. John was a Senior Vice President at Washington Trust Bank when he retired in June, 1997, after 30 years of service. In September of 1979, John and Darlene Hadley were married. While in high school, John participated in sports including football and basketball. In 1948 he was All-City Captain on the All-City Football team. During his professional career he was involved in several civic organizations including serving on the boards at Riverview Retirement Community, Inland N.W. Foundation and as president of United Way. John was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for many years and served on some of their committees. He recently became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. John was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughter Sandi Mathieson (Tim), sons Tom Hilsen (Jayme) and Tim Hilsen, all from Spokane; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, JoAnn Anderson (Randy), Spokane, EileenGriffin, Apopka, FL, one uncle, Robert Hilsen, Grand Junction, CO, plus several cousins, nephews and nieces.
