John D. Hawley Obituary (Age 68) We lost our dear husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, nephew, cousin and friend John Honey on July 24, 2016. We feel such an emptiness but are so grateful for our wonderful memories. John Duane Hawley was the only son born to Harold and Ethel Hawley on October 9, 1947 in Sidney, Montana. He joined sister Pamela Kilen (Fairview). Three more sisters, Angela (Elmer) McCauley (Viola, Wisconsin), Karen (Robert) Barstad (Gleichen, Alberta, Canada) and Robin (Dennis) Trudell (Fairview, Montana) were later added to the family. John graduated from Fairview High School in 1966 where he met his wife Nadine Jensen. John joined the Navy serving his country from 1966-1970 with two tours of duty to Vietnam on the USS Hancock. He married Nadine on April 25, 1970. John and Nadine moved to Spokane where John pursued his accounting degree at Kinman Business University, graduating in 1972. John worked for 20 years for Fidelity Savings Bank in the data center where John met many of his life-long friends. After that John worked for Goodwill Industries, and then Beneficial In-home care. John acquired friends along the way, many from his wife's work at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (NIOSH). If you were considered a friend by John, you were his friend for life. John and Nadine welcomed their only child Michael Richard on November 6, 1976. Life was filled and very busy with parenthood and fun times with men's, women's and co-ed softball where John became known to all as John Honey. Many weekend trips were taken and lots of memories were made and stories to tell and retell. Ask anyone who participated in the Geroux tournament, and the John and John golf tournaments and you will hear story after story, most of them getting better with time. As parents we followed Mike's sports activities and traveled with his soccer teams. Mike presented us with our greatest gifts, our grandchildren. John was such a proud and loving Grampy and was happy to be able to spend so much time with them. On their 40th wedding anniversary, Nadine "encouraged" John to go on just one cruise which turned out to be life-changing. John became instantly addicted to cruising and in the 6 years since that first cruise they have taken 16 more! He loved being at sea and seeing the world. He did grumble about all the walking Nadine made him do but said he would follow her wherever she went. Cruising and other travels took them to Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Panama, Mexico, Arizona and Hilton Head, South Carolina. He took full advantage of retirement and retirement funds and we are so thankful for the wonderful memories that will last forever. John was preceded in death by his father Harold, father-in-law Einer Jensen, brother-in-laws Marvin Kilen and Clyde Jensen, sister-in-law Sharon Jensen, nephew Gordon Jensen Jr., and great niece Rachael Beaner, and special friend Dennis Geroux. Survivors include his mother Ethel Hawley (Fairview, MT), wife Nadine Hawley, son Michael (Spokane), grandchildren Alex and Cayen Hawley and Brianna Dyson. He adored his many nieces, nephews and their spouses and children. John leaves behind his special friend Rocky Maiola and so many others that know how much John Honey cared for them. A Memorial Service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 30, 2016. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Spokane Guild School, 2118 W Garland Avenue, Spokane, WA 99205 or the charity of your choice. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of John, please visit our Tree Store.
