John D. Soileau, N.D. Obituary (Age 61) Dr. John Drouet Soileau, N.D., died surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at age 61. John was a loving and compassionate physician. He was a deep thinker with a rich spiritual inner life, and a world traveler, having studied in India, China, Tibet, and Sri Lanka, where he helped underserved people. Music was a significant part of John's life from a young age. As an adult, he composed and sang folk songs from his travels. In recent years, he and his family performed as the Silk Road band at the Spokane Fall Folk Festival. Born in Opelousas, Louisiana, John grew up in Maryland where he did his undergraduate in Microbiology at the University of Maryland and worked at National Institutes for Health. Later, he hitchhiked to Alaska, where he got his first taste of the Last Frontier. John studied at Bastyr University and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where he earned his doctorate in 1987. John practiced medicine in Fairbanks, Alaska for 11 years. Later, with his young family, he moved to Spokane, Washington, where he worked with his wife for the last 16 years. John was predeceased by his brothers Pete, Dave, and Dan Soileau and father John Drew Soileau, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Xiao Ping Li; his son, Gabriel Soileau; mother, Muriel Mimi Soileau of Conyers, GA; daughter, Bonnie Lafleur; and grandchildren, Sage Trinidad and River James Hernandez. Also mourning John's death are siblings, Tom Soileau, Anny McDuffie, Mary Kosensky, Clare Terry, many nieces and nephews and long-term friends Paul Ryan, Ruth Bar-Shalom and Mary Graig.
